Thirteen patients were analyzed pre- and postoperatively. Preoperative speech of ET patients was compared to healthy controls. PSA- and VIM-DBS were evaluated in a randomized, double-blind crossover phase.ResultsAt preoperative baseline, we found reduced intelligibility. Differences in acoustic and VAS data (‘ability to speak’) compared to controls were gradient. Articulation rate could be predicted by disease duration. Decreased articulation rate, spirantization and voicing were found for PSA- and VIM-DBS. Targets did not differ in terms of speech deterioration.ConclusionSpeech in ET patients without DBS can be impaired, dependent on patient’s individual characteristics. Both PSA- and VIM-DBS affect speech in a comparable way. Thus, the PSA can be considered an alternative DBS target in ET without higher risk of dysarthria. 000873521 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF3-572$$a572 - (Dys-)function and Plasticity (POF3-572)$$cPOF3-572$$fPOF III$$x0 000873521 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef 000873521 7001_ $$00000-0001-9149-3143$$aThies, Tabea$$b1 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aPetry-Schmelzer, Jan Niklas$$b2 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aDembek, Till A.$$b3 000873521 7001_ $$00000-0003-4590-708X$$aReker, Paul$$b4 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aMücke, Doris$$b5 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aGrice, Martine$$b6 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aVisser-Vandewalle, Veerle$$b7 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)131720$$aFink, Gereon R.$$b8 000873521 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)131613$$aBarbe, Michael$$b9$$eCorresponding author 000873521 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)1462477-1$$a10.1016/j.bandl.2019.104724$$gVol. 202, p. 104724 -$$p104724 -$$tBrain and language$$v202$$x0093-934X$$y2020 000873521 8564_ $$uhttps://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/873521/files/Becker_2019_Post%20Print_Brain%20%26%20Language_The%20effects%20of%20thalamic%20and%20posterior%20subthalamic%20deep%20brain%20stimulation.pdf$$yPublished on 2019-12-26.
