Abstract: Almost half a million people are newly diagnosed with cancer every year in Germany. Despite the tremendous progress that has been made across the various sciences involved in the field of cancer diagnosis and therapy, it remains a severe threat for every patient confronted with such a diagnosis. Combination of chemical and radiation therapy nowadays are the standard treatments to cure many patients. Although neutrons have been applied here in particular boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is considered with great potential to cure against cancer as a kind of “cellular surgery”. First experiments happened in the early sixties and seventies but availability of epithermal neutrons only at research neutron facilities hampered its application. In recent years this situation for the application of BNCT to patients is changing with the advent of powerful accelerator-based neutron sources. First projects have started at hospitals in Japan and similar projects are underway in Finland, England and Italy. In Germany the society for BNCT (DGBNCT e.V.) was founded recently to promote this therapy. In this presentation the state of the art in BNCT treatment and research will be presented, the new BNCT projects worldwide and the efforts in Europe and Germany to promote and establish the therapy in the fight against cancer.
