Abstract: Confining nuclear spin-polarized atoms in storage cells is more difficult than expected, because for some reason the atoms recombine on the surface of the storage cell and formmolecules, even when chemistry predicts they should not be able to do so. Since the goal inusing storage cells is to increase the target densitiy of polarized atoms, recombination mustbe prevented, because recombination to molecules decreases the nuclear spin polarizationof the atoms. Recombination rates were found to vary on different surface materials. Therefore, a variety of materials have been tested, from metal surfaces such as copper, gold, or nickel, to ceramic surfaces, to liquid surfaces such as fomblin oil.Scientists in the LHCspin project are currently working on developing a storage cell thatcan be used for nuclear spin-polarized experiments with hydrogen atoms at the LargeHadron Collider at CERN. Due to vacuum limitations the idea is to use a carbon coatingfor the storage cell, but so far no data exists on the behavior of nuclear spin-polarizedhydrogen atoms on carbon coated storage cell surfaces. As next, the nuclear polarization preservation inside such cells must be investigated forboth, atoms and molecules.
