We investigated whether taste can be dynamically encoded, maintained, and retrieved on short time scales consistent with working memory (WM). We use novel single and multi-item taste recognition tasks to show that a single taste can be reliably recognized despite repeated oro-sensory interference suggesting active and resilient maintenance (Experiment 1, N = 21). When multiple tastes were presented (Experiment 2, N = 20), the resolution with which these were maintained depended on their serial position, and recognition was reliable for up to three tastes suggesting a limited capacity of gustatory WM. Lastly, stimulus similarity impaired recognition with increasing set size, which seemed to mask the awareness of capacity limitations. Together, the results advocate a hybrid model of gustatory WM with a limited number of slots where items are stored with varying precision. 000909615 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5251$$a5251 - Multilevel Brain Organization and Variability (POF4-525)$$cPOF4-525$$fPOF IV$$x0 000909615 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, Journals: juser.fz-juelich.de 000909615 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)165363$$aHöchenberger, Richard$$b1 000909615 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aRuda, Iryna$$b2 000909615 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)131720$$aFink, Gereon R.$$b3 000909615 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)162395$$aViswanathan, Shivakumar$$b4$$ufzj 000909615 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)165362$$aOhla, Kathrin$$b5 000909615 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2615211-3$$a10.1038/s41598-022-12005-x$$gVol. 12, no. 1, p. 8056$$n1$$p8056$$tScientific reports$$v12$$x2045-2322$$y2022 000909615 8564_ $$uhttps://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/909615/files/Li%20Lim_2022_Sci%20Rep_The%20capacity%20and%20organization%20of%20gustatory%20working%20memory.pdf$$yOpenAccess 000909615 8767_ $$8SN-2022-00413-b$$92022-10-07$$a1200185158$$d2022-11-21$$eAPC$$jZahlung erfolgt$$lDEAL: Springer 000909615 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:909615$$pdnbdelivery$$popenCost$$pVDB$$pdriver$$pOpenAPC$$popen_access$$popenaire 000909615 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)131720$$aForschungszentrum Jülich$$b3$$kFZJ 000909615 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)162395$$aForschungszentrum Jülich$$b4$$kFZJ 000909615 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-525$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF4-520$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF4-500$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF4$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$9G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5251$$aDE-HGF$$bKey Technologies$$lNatural, Artificial and Cognitive Information Processing$$vDecoding Brain Organization and Dysfunction$$x0 000909615 9141_ $$y2022 000909615 915__ $$0LIC:(DE-HGF)CCBY4$$2HGFVOC$$aCreative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0160$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEssential Science Indicators$$d2021-02-03 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1190$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBiological Abstracts$$d2021-02-03 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0113$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded$$d2021-02-03 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0700$$2StatID$$aFees$$d2021-02-03 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0510$$2StatID$$aOpenAccess 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0561$$2StatID$$aArticle Processing Charges$$d2021-02-03 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0300$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bMedline$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0501$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bDOAJ Seal$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0500$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bDOAJ$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0030$$2StatID$$aPeer Review$$bDOAJ : Blind peer review$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0600$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEbsco Academic Search$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0030$$2StatID$$aPeer Review$$bASC$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bClarivate Analytics Master Journal List$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1050$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBIOSIS Previews$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1040$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bZoological Record$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bCurrent Contents - Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences$$d2022-11-09 000909615 915pc $$0PC:(DE-HGF)0000$$2APC$$aAPC keys set 000909615 915pc $$0PC:(DE-HGF)0003$$2APC$$aDOAJ Journal 000909615 920__ $$lyes 000909615 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)INM-3-20090406$$kINM-3$$lKognitive Neurowissenschaften$$x0 000909615 9801_ $$aFullTexts 000909615 980__ $$ajournal 000909615 980__ $$aVDB 000909615 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 000909615 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)INM-3-20090406 000909615 980__ $$aAPC
