%X We introduce a method to determine the lateral diffusion constants of planar organic molecules adsorbed on surfaces from the temporal width tau of pulses in the tunneling current measured for a stationary scanning tunneling microscope tip. The method uses the molecular footprint as a scale bar and evaluates tau as the first-passage time. Temperature-dependent diffusion constants are reported for the two model molecules copper phthalocyanine and 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride adsorbed on the Ag(100) surface.
