Our goal is twofold, namely, to argue that considering the axiological category of meaningfulness can enrich AI ethics, on the one hand, and to portray and evaluate the small, but growing literature that already exists on the relation between meaning in life and AI ethics, on the other hand. We start out our review by clarifying the basic assumptions of the meaning in life discourse and how it understands the term ‘meaningfulness’. After that, we offer five general arguments for relating philosophical questions about meaning in life to questions about the role of AI in human life. For example, we formulate a worry about a possible meaningfulness gap related to AI on analogy with the idea of responsibility gaps created by AI, a prominent topic within the AI ethics literature. We then consider three specific types of contributions that have been made in the AI ethics literature so far: contributions related to self-development, the future of work, and relationships. As we discuss those three topics, we highlight what has already been done, but we also point out gaps in the existing literature. We end with an outlook regarding where we think the discussion of this topic should go next. 001006831 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5255$$a5255 - Neuroethics and Ethics of Information (POF4-525)$$cPOF4-525$$fPOF IV$$x0 001006831 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, Journals: juser.fz-juelich.de 001006831 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)161345$$aRüther, Markus$$b1$$eCorresponding author 001006831 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2573482-9$$a10.1007/s13347-023-00620-z$$gVol. 36, no. 2, p. 20$$n2$$p20$$tPhilosophy & technology$$v36$$x2210-5433$$y2023 001006831 8564_ $$uhttps://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/1006831/files/s13347-023-00620-z.pdf$$yOpenAccess 001006831 8767_ $$d2023-09-08$$eHybrid-OA$$jDEAL 001006831 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:1006831$$pdnbdelivery$$popenCost$$pVDB$$pdriver$$pOpenAPC_DEAL$$popen_access$$popenaire 001006831 9101_ $$0I:(DE-HGF)0$$6P:(DE-HGF)0$$a Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich$$b0 001006831 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)161345$$aForschungszentrum Jülich$$b1$$kFZJ 001006831 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-525$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF4-520$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF4-500$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF4$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$9G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5255$$aDE-HGF$$bKey Technologies$$lNatural, Artificial and Cognitive Information Processing$$vDecoding Brain Organization and Dysfunction$$x0 001006831 9141_ $$y2023 001006831 915__ $$0LIC:(DE-HGF)CCBY4$$2HGFVOC$$aCreative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)3002$$2StatID$$aDEAL Springer$$d2022-11-16$$wger 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0510$$2StatID$$aOpenAccess 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS$$d2023-08-22 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0300$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bMedline$$d2023-08-22 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0600$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEbsco Academic Search$$d2023-08-22 001006831 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0030$$2StatID$$aPeer Review$$bASC$$d2023-08-22 001006831 915pc $$0PC:(DE-HGF)0000$$2APC$$aAPC keys set 001006831 915pc $$0PC:(DE-HGF)0001$$2APC$$aLocal Funding 001006831 915pc $$0PC:(DE-HGF)0002$$2APC$$aDFG OA Publikationskosten 001006831 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)INM-7-20090406$$kINM-7$$lGehirn & Verhalten$$x0 001006831 9801_ $$aFullTexts 001006831 980__ $$ajournal 001006831 980__ $$aVDB 001006831 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 001006831 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)INM-7-20090406 001006831 980__ $$aAPC
