Abstract: Perennial flower-rich wild plant species (WPS) can help support biodiversity and improve the recreational value of the agroecosystems while also providing biomass and sequestering carbon. When harvested in late winter, WPS biomass is very suitable for combustion. Therfore, this study assesses WPS as an additional sustainable resource for pellet combustion in both residential and industrial sectors. All WPS investigated here, were found economically viable for pellet combustion. The main drivers are (i) the low cultivation costs, (ii) the subsidies, and (iii) the low pelletizing costs due to a low moisture content. However, high ash contents justify the need to (i) pre-treat WPS biomass, (ii) blend it with woody-biomass or (iii) supplement it with additives to attain international standards for household stoves. This approach appeared technically feasible providing a research field with significant potential impacts. Since 70% of the pellet market is demanded by households, public concerns about the regulatory framework for the production of pellets from biomass of agricultural residues must be addressed in order to develop this market.
