1st Helmholtz Energy Conference, KoblenzKoblenz, Germany, 12 Jun 2023 - 13 Jun 20232023-06-122023-06-13

Abstract: Ceramic proton conductors with function-tailored properties gain increasing scientific and industrial interest due to their multifaceted applications at temperatures lower than the conventional solid oxide cells. Along with their application as electrochemical energy convertors (fuel cells, electrolyzers and reversible), proton conducting ceramic cells (PCC) offer much broader application perspectives for synthesis of added value chemicals such as ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), methanol (CH3OH), syngas (CO+H2), olefins (e.g. ethylene) or aromatics (e.g. C6H6) in specially designed ceramic membrane reactors. Such concepts for integration of proton conducting ceramics with chemical electrosynthesis offer significant process intensification resulting in higher overall energy efficiency, products selectivity, yields and defossilization of the conventional pathways in chemistry. The present talk will give an overview on different functional and utilization aspects of selected proton conductors (e.g. BaZr1-x(Ce,Y)xO3-δ, La5.5WO12-δ) and ceramic composites (BaZr1-x(Ce,M)xO3-δ:Ce1-xMxO2-δ) and devices based on them. Moreover, it will highlight such novel technological approaches as pathfinders in green chemistry, and more specifically in the context of the recently granted European Project ECOLEFINS. The project aims at establishing a new, all-electric paradigm for the electro-conversion of CO2 and H2O to light olefins through RES-powered and completely defossilized chemistry.
