Abstract: The electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor sensor (EIS) provides a promising technique for the electrical detection of biomarkers by their intrinsic electrical charge. Due to the charge-screening effect, EIS sensors are less sensitive when samples contain multiple charged species. Our study combines the EIS sensor with the frequency mixing magnetic detection (FMMD) technique to improve functionality and produce more reliable results. The principle of the dual-modality technique is to use superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPNs) as receptor carriers and pull them towards the surface of the EIS with an external magnet. FMMD exposes SPNs to both low-frequency and high-frequency magnetic fields. The magnetic response of SPNs induces a voltage in the detection coil. The hydrodynamic radius of SPNs can be determined by observing a phase shift toward lower frequencies caused by the Brownian relaxation of the particles. The target can be confirmed when both techniques detect it in a sample. As a result of this dual-modality technique, selectivity and sensitivity can be highly improved.
