Abstract: A class of codes which recently received a lot of attention because of their good properties are Quantum Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. We investigate a Belief Propagation (BP) decoder for such codes and show numerically its success and limitations. We introduce a new, generalized decoder building on region-based free energy approximations. Apart from the original implementation of BP it shows the emergence of a threshold under bit-flip and depolarizing noise for the surface code.
