Abstract: We have studied the structural and magnetic properties of magnetic nanoparticledispersions upon cooling and heating over the solvent melting temperature. The particles consist of iron oxide dispersed in water or toluene with diametersranging from 10 to 20 nm. The magnetic properties were studied using SQUIDmagnetometry employing zero field cooled (ZFC)/field cooled (FC) magnetizationcurves at different fields and hysteresis curves. To investigate the influenceof temperature on the properties of nanoparticles and their assemblies, in situSAXS measurements were performed at variable temperatures. We observe distinctfreezing/melting signatures in magnetometry of the nanoparticle-solventsystem depending on the particle size and the type of solvent.
