Abstract: The HBS („High Brilliance neutron Source”) is an ambitious HiCANS project being developed by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS). The technical design report [1] for the facility has been published in 2023 featuring the accelerator (protons, 70 MeV, 100 mA), three individual target-moderator-reflector stations and the associated instrumentation, which will allow scientific applications on the level of today’s well-established research reactor neutron sources. In addition to the simulation-dominated design work, important components of the HBS setup have been realized and tested in the JULIC Neutron Platform at the JULIC cyclotron accelerator of the IKP (Institute for nuclear physics) at Forschungszentrum Jülich which started operation with its first beam on target in December 2022.In this presentation we will outline the technical design of the HBS facility and its main components and show results of the tests performed at the JULIC NP. Ideas about the path towards the realization of the facility will complete this part.A second part of the presentation will focus on the instrumentation suite proposed for the HBS spanning the range from elastic and inelastic neutron scattering instruments to analytics and imaging instruments, both for basic science and industrial applications.[1] T.
