Abstract: Keynote Talk at Österreichischer Bibliothekartag 2019, 10.-13. September 2019, Messe Congress Graz, Austria Valuing Open Science Mittwoch, 11. September 2019 | 10:05 - 10:40 Abstract: Studies consistently show generally positive attitudes amongst researchers to most elements of Open Science. Yet these good thoughts have yet to translate to good practice on a large scale. This talk discusses the role of skills, tools and incentives as key elements in promoting Open Science to overcome this value/action gap. It balances discussion of support systems and incentives, and critically analyses the direction of current top-down actions to push open practices, including Plan S, FAIR data mandates and DORA. In this light, the move towards Open Science is shown to require a realignment of what we value in research, and here the library has a key role to play. Biography: Tony Ross-Hellauer is leader of the Open and Reproducible Research Group at Graz University of Technology, Senior Researcher at Know-Center, and Editor-in-Chief of the MDPI open access journal “Publications.”  Tony has a PhD in Information Studies (University of Glasgow, 2012), as well as degrees in Information and Library Studies and Philosophy. His research focuses on a range of issues related to open science evaluation, skills, policy, governance, monitoring and infrastructure. He is former Scientific Manager for OpenAIRE, co-author of the Open Science Training Handbook, and a core member of Research Data Alliance Austria, Open Access Network Austria and the Austrian Open Science Support Group. He co-leads TRANSPOSE (transpose-publishing.github.io), a grassroots initiative to build a crowdsourced database of journal policies for preprints and peer review.
