Abstract: To build high speed magnetic bearings using sintered NdFeB magnets, it is necessary to assemble bandages with suitable interference by press-fitting. Here we investigate the joining process between titanium grade 5 bandages and sintered NdFeB magnets using finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental measurements with different friction. The coefficient of friction, µ is determined by measured and simulated force-displacement curves. Simulations show that the coefficient of friction between the joining parts strongly influences residual stresses in the magnet rings and subsequently the permissible speed of the magnetic bearings.
