Abstract: The share of imported energy in the European Union's primary energy consumption increased from 50 % in 1990 to over 60 % in 2019. Although the further extension of renewable energy production and the increasing electrification in every sector will reduce thisdependency, a European energy autarky based on renewable energies cannot be assured in the short timeframe given until 2045. Hence, renewable energy imports based on hydrogen will play a vital role within the future energy system.
