abstract = {Developing sustainable cultivation methods for medicinal
plants to meet the growing demand for high-quality raw
materials is of great importance to the pharmaceutical
industry. At the same time, it is important to minimize
environmental impact and protect biodiversity. As part of
the BioeconomyREVIER initiative to manage the structural
change resulting from the phase-out of lignite, the Rhenish
mining area is to be developed into a model region for a
sustainable bioeconomy. To this end, projects are being
supported in which innovative solutions are developed and
implemented in the form of innovation labs through close
cooperation between science and industry. One example is the
“Circular PhytoREVIER“ project, which focuses on
sustainable value creation with medicinal plants in the
Rhenish mining area. The three scientific partners involved,
Fraunhofer IME, Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Forschungszentrum
Jülich, IBG-2, have combined their respective expertise,
resources, infrastructures and preliminary work to establish
yield- and location-optimized medicinal plants and to
cultivate them both in the field and in closed indoor
systems. We develop innovative methods for the targeted
control and increase of the active ingredient content
through the application of biological, chemical and physical
stresses as well as for the non-invasive determination of
growth and harvest parameters. The work of the Fraunhofer
IME in this context includes the development of molecular
markers for breeding and the generation of cell and tissue
cultures of selected medicinal plants. One of our model
plants is Arnica montana, which produces sesquiterpene
lactones (SL) as valuable compounds. Our work has initially
focused on the identification of the previously unknown SL
biosynthetic genes and, in the future, on their
characterization. For this purpose, we are currently
focusing on the establishment of in vitro propagation of
arnica plants, as well as plant regeneration from single
cells, and finally on the genetic modification of Arnica
montana in order to be able to characterize the biosynthetic
genes of the SL metabolism in the future and to optimize the
SL content in the plant or in cell culture.},
