Abstract: The Terrestrial Systems Modeling Platform (TSMP, github.com/HPSCTerrSys/TSMP2) as a regional Earth system model allows to simulate and analyze complex interactions and feedbacks of the coupled water, energy and matter cycles from groundwater to the top-of-atmosphere. With its highly modular approach, it integrates three compartments: the atmospheric model ICON or COSMO, the land surface model eCLM or CLM3.5, and the hydrologic model ParFlow, all coupled via the OASIS3-MCT coupler. This presentation builds on the capabilities of TSMP to examine new investigations with regional groundwater-to-atmosphere climate simulations with TSMP1 with a focus on the projected changes in key terrestrial water cycle variables across the PRUDENCE regions of Europe and the causal relationships between soil moisture, solar radiation, and air temperature during compound dry-hot events. Furthermore, we explore the TSMP2 framework for model states and detail our development strategy, as well as technical and performance aspects relevant to coupling and next-generation modular supercomputing environments.
