Abstract: In crowds, humans try to prevent physical contact with strangers. Nonetheless, contactscannot always be prevented, especially in dynamic dense crowds. There is a physical reality of spatialconstraints through physical contacts. This can lead to impulse propagation and loss of balance. Therefore,to understand, e.g. balance recovery behaviour, knowledge about space occupancy and contacts isneeded.In this work, we use a parametric body model to represent the participants. Using this model, we canuse computer graphics techniques to determine contacts, allowing analysis of stepping strategies as wellas the rôle of arms and hands in balance recovery.
