Abstract: Sharing and reproducing research with Jupyter notebooks is harder than it seems. Institutional JupyterHubs lock shared work behind login walls; environment incompatibilities break notebooks on arrival; and a link that works for the author often returns a cold "403 Access Denied" to everyone else. Tools like Binder solve part of the problem by spinning up a notebook environment from a repository with a single click, but their sessions are stateless: changes vanish when the tab closes, and no persistent data storage is available. This presentation, told with a touch of epic storytelling, follows that journey from the myth of easy collaboration to the gates of Jupyter4NFDI.Jupyter4NFDI is a federated Jupyter service for the NFDI community that pairs Binder-style reproducibility with persistence. Notebooks can mount external storage such as B2DROP or AWS S3, and a single share link recreates the notebook, its environment, and its mounts for anyone who follows. Credentials stay hidden, and secure, GDPR-compliant access via IAM4NFDI welcomes researchers from across Europe and beyond — no matter their land or lineage. The result: what once took hours of configuration now takes minutes, and what was once lost is now reproducible — persistence, portability, and open federated collaboration, bound together in one hub.
