Bare and effective charge on rod-like fd viruses

2013

International Soft Matter Conference 2013, ISMC2013, RomeRome, Italy, 15 Sep 2013 - 19 Sep 20132013-09-152013-09-19

Abstract: The fd virus is a filamentous bacteriophage, which is often used as a model system for rod-like colloidal particles. In addition, the virus properties can be tuned by chemical modifications, extending its use as a model system. As the surface structure of the fd virus is well known, the charge on its surface can be calculated from the chemical equilibriums of the ionizable groups on its surface, without any adjustable parameters, apart from a possible Stern layer thickness with immobile ions. These effectively immobile ions can be considered as condensed ions. The bare charge and effective charge as obtained from electrophoresis are compared and the effectively immobile ions are put in relation to the surface structure of the fd virus. After this validation of the theory, it can also be used to calculate e.g. the ionic distribution around the rod-like virus and the effective Debye-Hückel charge which could be useful to model the interactions between viruses.
