In addition, the virus properties can be tuned by chemical modifications, extending its use as a model system. As the surface structure of the fd virus is well known, the charge on its surface can be calculated from the chemical equilibriums of the ionizable groups on its surface, without any adjustable parameters, apart from a possible Stern layer thickness with immobile ions. These effectively immobile ions can be considered as condensed ions. The bare charge and effective charge as obtained from electrophoresis are compared and the effectively immobile ions are put in relation to the surface structure of the fd virus. After this validation of the theory, it can also be used to calculate e.g. the ionic distribution around the rod-like virus and the effective Debye-Hückel charge which could be useful to model the interactions between viruses. 000138854 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-451$$a451 - Soft Matter Composites (POF2-451)$$cPOF2-451$$fPOF II$$x0 000138854 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:138854$$pVDB 000138854 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)130577$$aForschungszentrum Jülich GmbH$$b0$$kFZJ 000138854 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-451$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF2-450$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF2-400$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF2$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bSchlüsseltechnologien$$lBioSoft$$vSoft Matter Composites$$x0 000138854 9141_ $$y2013 000138854 920__ $$lyes 000138854 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)ICS-3-20110106$$kICS-3$$lWeiche Materie $$x0 000138854 980__ $$aposter 000138854 980__ $$aVDB 000138854 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)ICS-3-20110106 000138854 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED
