Abstract: In many surface waters in the Federal State of Hesse high nutrient inputs and their consequences constitute a significant pressure. The implementation of measures to reduce this pressure pursuant to the EC Water Framework Directive (WED) presupposes data differentiated for sources and pathways. The Julich Research Centre was charged with a state-wide quantification of phosphorus inputs by means of the model MEPhos in a resolution of 20 m grid-cell width. The following pathways were considered: artificial drainage, groundwater, erosion, wash-off, municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial effluents, stormwater sewers, and combined-sewer overflows. The findings will be used to support the formation of management plans and action programmes pursuant to the WFD.
