Abstract: This paper contains the documentation on the VM/CMS worker machine which has been developed at KFA Jülich. The software augments the family of operating systems which use the Los Alamos Common File System (CFS) as a central file storage.CFS was developed in the late seventies to provide a centralized file server capability for a large heterogeneous computing network running a variety of operating systems (e.g. CTSS, NOS, MVS, VMS, UNIX). It consists of different components, a central component running under MVS which controls the storage space and communicates with the associated systems, and decentral components on the associated systems which are the interfaces between the user and the central component. The interfaces are called worker machines. To be useful at KFA a worker machine for VM/CMS had to be developed to provide primarily an archival function for the interactive users. The first part of this document describes the design decisions for the VM/CMS worker machine and their realization as well as an assessment of future developments. Technical details of the implementation are given in the second part. It contains the description of the main modules and of the communication protocol.
