Abstract: In this work, we present calculations on the leakage of fluid through the gap that forms between a rigid substrate with microscopic roughness and a flat but elastically deformable counter body that is pressed against the substrate. We find that the resistance to flow near the percolation threshold is determined by one, or at most very few constrictions. These constrictions can be described as saddle points and their contact mechanics determine the critical flow rather than the gap topography at large scales.
