Low molecular weight products are removed from the cultivation medium with in situ extraction, in situ adsorption or crystallisation to avoid product inhibition. One-pot processes are being developed to replace two-stage reactions. Recent developments in the integrated purification of high molecular weight products focus mainly on the integration of solid/liquid separation and initial product recovery such as expanded bed adsorption or extraction in aqueous two-phase systems. Additionally, new approaches for a more efficient processing of inclusion bodies have been developed.
