Abstract: Atmospheric simulation chambers of large volume ore an excellent tool for investigating atmospheric chemical processes under well-defined conditions without the complexity of transport processes. Since it is possible to perform experiments at extremely low mixing ratios the results from such experiments can be transferred more easily to real-world atmospheric conditions. During the lost 30 years the use of simulation chambers has significantly increased our understanding of the atmospheric chemistry of trace gases and aerosols. More recently simulation chambers have been used also for the development of new analytical techniques for studying atmospheric trace species and for inter-comparison exercises of different measurement techniques.
