Abstract: Due to increasing complexity of modern architecture and building sizes, buildings more and more often require individual safety measures regarding fires. To determine those, either model experiments or computational fluid dynamics are considered. Several software solutions for the latter exist, and each is fitted for a certain type of scenario. We develop a software framework with the focus on fire and smoke spread for large-scale buildings. Since fires usually remain localized, we apply adaptive refinement techniques. For the spatial discretization, we chose the finite element method to benefit from its unique possibility for hp-refinement, using the open-source library deal.II. Common model equations for fire dynamics will be presented as well as the current state of our implementation, which allows for h-refinement up to this point.
