Abstract: This paper discusses predictions with integrated terrestrial system models, which model water and energy cycles from the deep subsurface to the upper atmosphere. Such predictions can be improved by data assimilation, making use of supercomputing. Two examples on very different scales (hillslope and continental) illustrate the strengths and remaining uncertainties of the approach.
