Abstract: This paper provides the theoretical basis for the REsCO project, which is characterized by close interdisciplinary cooperation between economics, sociology, and social and environmental psychology. First, the respective disciplines and their differences and similarities are briefly presented. It is shown that all disciplines have a common interest in human behavior in social situations, but they differ in perspective and focus. In economics, the focus is laid on the allocation of limited resources, in sociology on the coexistence of members of a social group, in social psychology on the individual in a social situation and internal mental processes, and in environmental psychology on the interactions between humans and their physical, material and socio-cultural environment. In all three disciplines, tendencies can be discerned to complement and develop research in one's own discipline with insights and theories from other disciplines. In a second step, relevant research topics and theoretical approaches from economics and psychology for the energy transition will be explained. In this context, the economic model of the homo oeconomicus, its basic principle and its limitations are discussed, as well as principles of behavioral economics and their connection to psychology. Likewise, psychological explanatory models and possible factors influencing various behaviors connected to energy (acceptance, investment, and consumer behavior) are discussed. The resulting interdisciplinary discussion reveals interesting links for creating a common model of human behavior in the context of the energy transition.
