Genetic and phylogenetic uncoupling of structure and function in human transmodal cortex

2022

20th Brain Connectivity Workshop - „20 years of Brain Connectivity Research: Breakthroughs in understanding mechanisms and predicting function“, DüsseldorfDüsseldorf, online event, 15 Jun 2022 - 15 Jun 20222022-06-152022-06-15

Abstract: Brain structure scaffolds intrinsic function, supporting flexible human cognition. However, it remains unclear how a static, genetically controlled architecture may support flexible cognition. Here I will present work where we performed genetic (twin-based heritability), phylogenetic (humans versus macaques) and cognitive analyses to understand how the macroscale organization of structure-function coupling across the cortex can inform its role in human cognition. Our findings indicated that genetic and evolutionary uncoupling of structure and function in different transmodal systems may support social cognition and autobiographic memory.
