Abstract: As examples of the implementation of nuclear energy, the alternative potentials for meeting electricity demand and for coal gasification in Nordrhein-Westfalen have been studied, with particular applications in the chemical and iron and steel industries of this state. The effects on competitiveness and choice of sites for these industries and on hard coal production have been quantified. The political significance of implementing nuclear energy for improving the economic structure depends not only on these individual economic effects but also on the contribution to growth and the effects which spread from these industries throughout the whole regional economy, which have also been quantified. The development of the chemical, iron and steel and coal industries can affect over 30% of the entire labour force of Nordrhein-Westfalen; thus for these industries energy-economic forces have appreciable structural effects.
