Abstract: For interstitials the scattering cross section between the Bragg reflections is very sensitive to the pnsition of the defect atom and the displacements of the neighbouring lattice atoms. In contrast to this the scattering near the Bragg reflections (Huang-scattering) is mainly governed by the displacement field at large distances from the defect and gives information about defect symmetry and strength. For determining structures of point def ects a measurement of scattering far from reciprocal lattice points is therefore the best suited and most direct method. This is demonstrated by numerical cross section calculations for some possible interstitial configurations which are based on Kanzaki-force defect models in a lattice statics approach. X-ray measurements of point defect scattering in this regionfar from reciprocal lattice points have not been done before: With conventional X-ray set-ups it was not possible to separate the defect scattering from the thermal diffuse and Compton background scattering which is up to 2 orders in magnitude larger in case of typical defect concentrations of some 10$^{-4}$. Such measurements, however, become possible if large samples and x-ray sources of high luminous density are used in connection with multidetector arrangements. Therefore a special experimental arrangement was developed which consists of a 100 kW X-ray tube with rotating anode, a focusing mirror and a multidetector system, consisting of 100 Si(Li)detectors. With this set-up the configuration of intrinsic interstitials in irradiated aluminum was determined as the 100-split configuration. The measurement was done in samples which contained an atomic density of Frenkel defects up to 5$\cdot$10$^{-4}$.
