Abstract: A procedure is presented by which the level scheme of the neutral component of a plasma may be converted into an effective level scheme consisting of a smallnumber of effective levels. Cesium under conditions of technological interest is treated as an example. An effective level scheme consisting of five levels is seen to give results deviating less than 5% from those of Norcross and Stone [5] who considered 53 levels.
