Abstract: The present work contributes to the improved understanding of the mechanical behavior of SiO$_{2}$ scales on SiC-based ceramics. Scales were grown on Si, SiC and SiSiC materials by oxidizing these material variants at 1300 and 1370°C in defined atmospheres with different water vapor content (4-70v/o). In the presence of K- and Al-hydroxides in the oxidation atmosphere two-layered scales were formed on all substrate materials. The layer adjacent to the substrate exhibited crystalline structure whereas an amorphous scale portion was observed towards the surface. The mechanical properties of the crystalline and amorphous sublayers were almost identical to those of cristobalite and fused silica, respectively.
