Abstract: Gravity waves (GWs) are one of the most important drivers of middle atmospheric circulationsand strongly affect the polar vortex of the winter hemisphere. These waves are ofcomparatively small horizontal scales and are generated by a multitude of processes, of whichwind flow over orography and convection are the most common. The resolution of today’sclimate models is, however, too coarse for resolving GWs explicitly; therefore, they need tobe parameterized within long-term climate projections. These parameterizations are a firstapproximation of the GW’s effect on the atmosphere. A technical shortcoming common toparameterization schemes is their vertical column-wise application without the possibilityof horizontal communication between adjacent grid cells due to computation-cost intensity.Hence, parametrization schemes do not account for the horizontal propagation of GWs, eventhough many studies show the far propagation of gravity waves (and especially mountainwaves, MWs) from their sources. This horizontal propagation transports the momentumcarried by the orographic GWs away from regions of high orographic variability; therebyspreading the effect of the orography on the atmosphere dynamics. Studies attribute highvariability and model biases in the southern hemisphere to this lack of this horizontal propagationof mountain waves within climate models...
