Abstract: The problem of factoring integers plays a key role in data and communication security. Quantum computers promise a breakthrough in solving this problem. However, current devices cannot live up to the promise. We discuss (1) fundamental challenges on digital quantum computers and (2) experimental evidence for limited scalability on analog quantum computers. We also scrutinize the most recent factoring records. We conclude with future perspectives on factoring large integers on quantum computers.
