Abstract: Over the years, the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) has developed a comprehensive ‘Introduction to Supercomputing at JSC - Theory & Practice’ training course to bridge the gap between university education and practical high-performance computing (HPC) science. Since its inception in 1992, the course has evolved from face-to-face lectures to an online format, integrating a modular lecture structure and practical hands-on exercises. Divided into six modules, it covers fundamental HPC concepts, advanced techniques such as GPU programming and AI, JSC-specific tooling, and vendor-specific hardware insights. Hands-on sessions emphasize practical application, allowing participants to test workflows in their own work environments while receiving live support from tutors. The modular structure addresses challenges in HPC education stemming from vastly different levels of user competence, and helps ensure efficient HPC resource usage. The course prioritizes accessibility through asynchronous learning material, including slides, recordings, and self-study resources, ensuring continuous availability for users. Engagement and thereby higher learning outcome is achieved through interactive quizzes, moderated discussions, and a multi-channel support system. The course design provides a replicable concept that can be adopted by other HPC centers seeking to support their users through custom-fit HPC training.
