Abstract: Subject of this dissertation is the Juefch Electrodeionization process (J-EDI) for ultrapure water production in multiple areas of application. It is based on a combination of electrodialysis, ion exchange and electrolysis. Results of experimental and theoretical investigations show the mechanism of the cell as well as its advantages compared to classical ion exchange and mixed bed EDI processes. A detailed physicochemical model is introduced that describes the ion transport phenomena in the electrodsionization cell. The model is based on all ionic feed components including carbonate and silicate and the corresponding chemical reactions. A comparison of experimental and calculated concentration profiles in the water and resin phase, ion exchange fluxes and conductivity profiles shows very good correlations. Analysis of a long term test has shown that a mostly maintenance-free, continous operation of the J-EDI cell is possible without loss of performance for at least 20.000 hours
