Abstract: The coating layers of coated fuel particles are the most important barrier against gaseous and solid fission products generated during irradiation. Especially the SiC layer need high retention capability mainly for Ag- and Cs-isotopes and excellent mechanical performance under irradiation. So a characterization program was set up including 25 SiC-coatings deposited under different conditions, to find correlations between material parameters and fission products release properties. The results from the applied physical characterization methods are reported. However this studies did not result in a material parameter of unirradiated SiC, which is correlated quantitatively with the fission product retention of the SiC coating. Nevertheless, the large amount of additional informations has improved the understanding of SiC significantly.
