Abstract: Monochromatic and tunable phonons (up to 870 GHz) were scattered from surfaces covered with helium films of various thicknesses. A strong phonon lass due to lessthan three atomic layers was observed which was independent of frequency. A frequency analysis of the scattered phonons showed that there are nonlinearprocesses in the surface layer. The results suggest a new approach to the understanding of the Kapitzaresistance.
