Abstract: The effect of lanthanurn ions on visual cells was studied in the lateral eye of Limulus (using intracellular electrodes) and in the retina of Astacus (using intracellular and/or extracellular electrodes) after external application of 1 mM/l La$^{+++}$ solution. 1.1 Results: 1. In Limulus the effective input resistance of the measuringcircuit was greatly increased under the action of lanthanum ions, while the membrane potential in the dark and the receptor potential showed only small changes.2. In Astacus lanthanum ions increased the dark resistance and decreased dark potential and receptor potential drastically. The effect was not reversible by following treatment with physiological solution. 3. During superfusion by sodium-free external solution (ca. 1% of normal sodium concentration at the preparation) darkpotential and receptor potential were slightly reduced in both preparations. The effective input resistance was increased. The effect of lanthanum ions in sodium-free solution did not differ markedly from the effect in normal sodium solution.
