Abstract: Data for emission, atmospheric concentration and deposition of toxic trace metals for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany have been critically collected from recent literature. Based on the specific emission factors for various pollution sources, a calculation of the emission of toxic metals is presented, which, in spite of scarce data for lead, cadmium and zinc, is used to compute a preliminary balance between emission and deposition. Since deposition was found to be regularly higher than could be expected from emission data, the existence of contributions from external pollution sources outside the territory can be presumed. At this moment it is, however, not posstble to give safe statements on the real nature of the difference between emission and deposition which might be partly caused also byuncertainties of data. A consideration of the ecotoxicological importance in the field of metal pollution leads to the following points: - ecochemical research on toxic metals should be intensifiedi - modern reliable analytical methods for the determination of toxic metals in air pollution should be extensively applied; - there is a lack of a close-meshed deposition collection network for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. Elements of a collection network for the estimation of wet deposition of toxic metals are presented. From long-term measurements of sampIes gathered in this network it was found that more than 90 % of the toxic metal content in wet deposition exists in the dissolved state. The extension of the collection network on dry deposition of toxic metals seems desirable.
