Abstract: This report describes the mechanisms of heat and mass transfer as well as the processes of flow within a catalytic radiant burner. In a first step the behaviour of an uncoated as well as directly-coated (catalytic) radiant burner is modelled for the combustion of natural gas in dependence upon the most important system and operating parameters. This step is confined to an analysis of the structure wall and the outer side of the structure. On the basis of the stationary, one-dimensionalconservation equations it provides the destribution of temperatures and concentrations. From this the conversion, radiant efficiency and flame temperatures are derived. Furthermore an estimation of the used catalysts with respect to the thermal resistance is possible. High conversion levels along with temperatures above the thermal limits of stability show the limits of catalytic combustion in the case of the directly-coated structure. On the basis of the description of the radiant burner a program to simulate the heating-system is introduced in a second step. By this means the total thermal efficiency in dependence upon the operating parameters and geometric limiting quantities may be determined. It considers the radiant heat exchange between the solid materials, radiant effects of the gas and convective mechanisms of heat.
