Abstract: The paper briefly summarizes the method ofreduced charge states, which is an almost exact method and serves to reduce the number of equations, which have to be solved simultaneously in the calculation of particle and heat fluxes. The method can be applied to both longitudinal ($\vert \vert \vec{B}$) and cross-field ($\perp \vec{B}$) transport theory and becomes increasingly important with the number of plasma ion species under consideration. In the present report we deal only with the longitudinal and the attributed neoclassical radial transport in toroidal magnetized plasmas. The calculations are performed within Grad's 21-moment approximation for the distribution functions of the various charge carriers. They are restricted to the collision-dominated (Pfirsch-Schlüter) transport regime. The method of derivation is outlined, and the results are compared with existing formulations, showing that earlier incomplete or incorrect formulae have to be revised. Only the most recent results [6] corresponding to Grad's 13-moment approximation agree with ours in the same approximation. Although for sake of clarity the calculations have been performed in the standard magnetic field geometry with concentric circular magnetic flux surfaces, they could be readily generalized for arbitrary magnetic field configurations.
