Abstract: Fuel cells convert energy directly into electrical energy. In the Federal Republic of Germany the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) consists of planar components produced bytape casting. A special design of the SOFC is the Anode Supported Planar System proposed by the Research Centre Jülich with a supporting, porous and gas permeableanode substrate with an effective electrical conductivity. The anode substrate consists of a cermet of Ni and 8 mol% Y$_{2}$O$_{3}$-stabilised ZrO$_{2}$. By developing an anode substrate with high porosity and gas permeability by tape casting the different possibilities to create pores are investigated and discussed. Rheological measurements are used to characterise the ceratnic slurries. The effect of the particular components are investigated with the help of the relative viscosity $\eta_{r}$ of the slurry. Variation of the binder concentration and binder type have an important influence on the slurry dispersion, but only an insignificant influence on the porosity and gas permeability. The addition of carbon to the slurry has increased the porosity of sintered tapes, but it has not led to the demanded gas permeability. With the addition of a special phenolic resin it was possible to improve the porosity and gas permeability signifieantly. With the help of rheological investigations it was also possible to optimise the developed slurries. The porestructure depends on the concentration of resin and plasticizer and is comparedwith the porestructure of coat-mix anode substrates, which are developed at the Research Centre Jülich. High porosity and gas permeability have a negative influence on the demanded electrical conductivity of the anode, which is very important for the performance of the SOFC. With the development of different slurries with phenolic resin it was possible to manufacture tapes with specified porosity and gas permeability over a wide range. Thus substrates with a compromise between gas permeability and electrical conductivity can be produced. A procedure to laminate tapes with polyvinylbutyral as a binder is worked out. There are no problems to connect two tapes, but there are a lot to adjust the shrinkage of tapes with different powders.
