Abstract: The abrasive behavior of M2AlX MAX phase materials (Ti2AlC, Cr2AlC, Ti2AlN) was investigated using sandblasting tests with glass beads and alumina particles. Interpretations are based on the specimens’ morphologies before and after the sandblasting tests. Overall, the abrasive behavior appears to be related to the brittleness index B, which is a function of the hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness. An extension of the analysis to literature data for different hardened and unhardened glasses indicated that this qualitative evaluation factor B can support in the prediction of the abrasive behavior of a wider range of brittle materials
