Abstract: Within the impact parameter treatment for inelastic atomic collisions the accuracy of the two-state approximations with atomic and molecular orbitals is estimated by comparison with an exactly soluble linear rnodel. In this model with two $\delta$-function-potentials of equal strength, suggested by G. Breit, the transition probabilities for elastic collisions and for charge exchange are solved exactly. These solutions show characteristic oscillations with varying impact velocity as have been found experimentally e.g. in proton hydrogen collisions. Even in the low velocity limit the two state approximations reproduce these oscillations only qualitatively in position and amplitude.
