Abstract: The analytic properties of the S-matrix in the complex energy plane are reviewed for potential scattering with particular attention to resonance scatterinq and decay of metastable states. For a one dimensional model potential with a potential barrier and a repulsive core exact formulas are derived for the energy and width of a resonance in terms of the scattering amplitudes of the barrier and the repulsive core alone. For narrow resonances simple and intuitive results are obtained, which are applied to semiclassical cases where the WKB approximation is valid.
