Abstract: In recent years, a process has been developed for the adsorptive chrornatographic separation of krypton at low temperatures (ACHAT process) by means of which radioactive krypton can be separated from the waste gases of nuclear facilities, for example from the dissolver off-gas of a reprocessing plant. This process has been tested to the point of industrial maturity. The separation of krypton according to this process is carried out in two steps. In the first step, the different gases, especially Kr and Xe, are adsorptively separated from the off-gas at a low temperature of about -160°C. In the subsequent second step, these adsorbed gases are fractionated by gas chromatography, heating the adsorbers according to a defined temperature program (maximum temperature +120°C) and simultaneously flushing them with helium. The experiments on a laboratory and pilot plant scale have shown that krypton can be reliably separated using the ACHAT process. The Kr decontamination factors are DF $\leq$ 1000, the Kr product purities vary between 80 and 90 vol.%. The latter can even be increased to values above 99 vol.% by the use of a simple adsorptive krypton repurification unit. The adsorbent used in the ACHAT process is a specifically selected type of activated charcoal. Additional experiment studies on temperature cycling resistance have shown that the adsorption properties of this charcoal are not even changed in continuous operation in the relevant ACHAT temperature range (-160°C to +120°C). Abrasion due to temperature cycling did not occur.Abstract
