Abstract: In the compound eye of the crayfish,$\underline{Astacus} \underline{Leptodactylus}$, adaptation to light and darkness involves massive redistribution of screening pigment granules within the cell of the photoreceptor. Apparently, the function of the pigment granules is to control the light flux in the photoreceptor, analog to the pupil rnechanism of vertebrates. The explanation for this intracellular organelle transport and for the mechanisms that participate in the control of these pigmentary responses are to a large degree controversial. The purpose of this paper was to determine which mechanism is responsible for the pigment granula transport and secondly to investigate the dependence of the screening pigment migration in the $\underline{Astacus}$ photoreceptor cells on the Ca-household.
